ABSTRACT: In the past fewyears, part of theoretical ecology has focussed on the spatiotemporal dynamicsgenerated by simple ecological models. To a large extent, the results obtainedhave changed our view of complexity. Specifically, simple rules are ableto produce complex spatiotemporal patterns. Consequently, some of the complexityunderlying nature does not necessarily have complex causes. The emergingframework has far-reaching implications in ecology and evolution. Amongothers, it is improving our understanding of topics such as the problemof scales, the response to habitat fragmentation, the relationship betweenchaos and extinction, and how high diversity levels are supported in nature.
