The fundamental don'ts:
Dear Editor,
In November 1996 the voters of California and Arizona sent a messageto the federal government about the worth of medical marijuana. Now thefederal government is undermining the voters by filing a lawsuit to shutdown six Cannabis Buyers Clubs. The feds are clearly out of line. Ratherthan reacting in an authoritarian way as they are doing, they should respectthe changes that are happening. California and Arizona are only two ofmany states, and America is only one of many countries that are now relaxingtheir marijuana laws.
In the early part of the century marijuana and hemp were legal and widelyused for smoking, making fabric, food and health care products. Unfortunately, the federal government is still living by the values of "reefer madness"that originally made marijuana illegal in the 1930s. These policies nolonger work.
It's time for America to wake up and stop the paranoia caused by prohibition. We can reduce crime, illegal black markets, and bring many alienated citizensback into the mainstream by making all drugs (including marijuana) availablethrough doctors and clinics, thus taking away the criminal incentive inthis trade. Sane policies that get drugs off the streets and into a medicalsetting will also reduce teenage use of dangerous drugs.
It's time to respect the voters, who are the real power of the government.
Sincerely,
Nori J. Muster
Silverlake, CA
