One school record fell and another was placed in serious jeopardy as senior tailback J.T. Rogan scored four touchdowns and rushed for 170 yards to help lead the Coronado Islanders to a 55-13 victory over Christian High School Saturday evening.
The game, which was played at Granite Hills High School, was never in doubt as senior Wesley Bowman took the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Rogan touchdown runs of 6 and 21 yards, followed by a Chris Leary 34-yard fumble return, and four Kyle Hammel extra points allowed the Islanders to score the first 28 points of the game. The contest was so lopsided that a running clock was employed for most of the second half.
Two more Rogan TD plunges of 7 yards and 1 yard, another scoring run of 34 yards by Bowman and a Chris Cumminshotel rooms Noordwijk fumble return for a touchdown completed the scoring. Sprinkle in three more Hammel kicks, stir briskly and you have 55 points and a perfect 7-0 record for the Islanders.
The victory did come at a cost as Bowman pulled a hamstring muscle late in the game, and figures to miss at least two weeks, depending on the severity of the injury. "He was on his way to a long touchdown and was in the clear when he pulled his hamstring," said Head Coach Bud Mayfield in an interview Sunday evening. "Well evaluate the severity of the injury and start therapy Monday.
Mayfield credited the center of the Islander defensive line for their role in the victory. "Christian ran a lot of straight-ahead plays and our line stopped a lot of plays for no gain or very little gain. The line includes Dan Simmons, Joey Naple, Jed Considine and Geoff Thorne. As a team we forced three fumbles and blocked a kick. Cummins had another pass interception and we played well on special teams."
ERROR MSGWith Bowman out of the lineup, Mayfield will have to do some juggling with his depth chart. The good news is that seniors Gene Pontes and Kyle Neeley are returning from injuries. "Pontes long-snapped and played some defensive end and tight end," Mayfield said. "Were working them back in and those two guys are back just in the nick of time. This was Genes first game back and Neeley played a little against Madison last week. The key for us is not losing too many people. We substituted as much as we could with 18 guys against Christian. They are down this year. Weve been there, so we understand."
Ironically, this might be the final game between Christian and Coronado, two original members of the Harbor League 13 years ago. Christian moves into the Coastal League next season.
Looking ahead to this weeks game, Mayfield spoke about University City (4-3 overall, 1-1 in the Harbor League), which fell by a score of 26-10 to Crawford last weekend. "University City has good team speed and a good running back. The question is, can they recover from the homecoming loss to Crawford? They played really hard and they didnt get the win. Our next game is at 3 in the afternoon Friday (at University City) and it will be Halloween."
The CHS Boys Water Polo Team ventured into hostile territory last weekend as they traveled to the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach to face perennial state water polo power Long Beach Wilson. On the surface it was a 13-10 loss, but when you consider that the Islanders gave up four goals in the first 150 seconds of the game, the contest was actually closer than the three goal loss might indicate.
Senior Tommy Corcoran got the Islanders on the scoreboard at the 2:07 mark of the first quarter, but it was the lone tally in a 6-1 quarter dominated by Long Beach. Corcoran helped lead the Islander charge with a goal at 5:47 of the second quarter. Perhaps the best Islander goal of the day followed 2 minutes later with an acrobatic steal and a drive for a breakaway goal by senior defender Matt Digges.
For the game Corcoran, who relishes the physical play that Long Beach Wilson specializes in, had four goals, two assists and drew five exclusions. Senior Chris Brown added four goals and single tallies by John Arnold and the aforementioned steal and goal by Digges completed the scoring.
Entering the game, Long Beach Wilson was ranked third in the state, with Coronado ranked eighth, so in one sense form held for the game. "We were focused, but unprepared for some of the things that happened in the game," commented Head Coach Randy Burgess. "We made some really nice adjustments and we didnt quit playing. We stepped up our game in the second half. Were now 13-3 after losing twice to Long Beach Wilson and once to Harvard Westlake."
hotel a MalagaSaturdays game was a rematch between Wilson and Coronado, with the first clash coming at the prestigious SoCal Invitational, won by Wilson 10-6. Knowing that two state-ranked teams were playing, the choice of two weak game officials was curious. Burgess was philosophical about the refereeing. "The game is called differently in Orange County. When you leave San Diego, you see a slightly different style of water polo that we have to learn to deal with. Several times there was an exclusion and then there was an offensive foul going the other way. "
Provided with ample opportunity to quit playing hard, the Islanders outscored Wilson 6-4 in the second half. Burgess liked what he saw from his team. "Not a single person had his chin down. Each timeout, in the water or on the deck, they were still looking to learn. Were still learning and progressing."
In the Islanders other game last week, they won an 8-6 contest against Scripps Ranch, with Brown scoring twice and single goals from Arnold, Digges, Corcoran, Tim Farrell, Joey Jankiewicz, and Sean Castillo. At press time, the Islanders were slated to play Bishops in an early-week game, La Jolla High School this afternoon at 3 pm, they play Soquel High School in Santa Cruz on Thursday and then play in the NorCal Invitational Tournament starting Friday in San Jose.
The Girls Volleyball Team stands poised to win another Harbor League title this season, after they defeated both Crawford and Clairemont last week. Head Coach Phil Trotter spoke regarding his teams improvement from the first encounter with the Chieftains. "They took us to five games the first time we played them. We beat them soundly in three games over at their place last week. We beat them 25-19, 25-12, and 25-22 and it really wasnt even that close."
"Were really starting to come together as a team," Trotter added. "Were definitely developing more team continuity and not beating ourselves any longer." Also several players are picking up their games as the playoffs approach.
"Kelly Phelps, a sophomore, had her best game of the year against Clairemont." She plays opposite and its great to see here have a good match. Amanda Jewett transferred in as a senior and she played great in the middle and served very well. She had an outstanding match."
The setter in volleyball is equivalent to the quarterback in football and Trotter likes what he has seen from his setter, sophomore Megan Mushovic. "Shes one of our main reasons for our advanced play. Shes a great all-around athlete and a great volleyball player. Shes getting comfortable out there and has a real feel for the game."
The Islanders have dominated Harbor League play this season, having lost only two games (a varsity match is won by taking three of five games) all year, both to Clairemont in their first match. This week, Coronado can clinch the league title by defeating Madison at home Thursday. The match starting time is set for 3:30pm.
The Girls Golf Team split their two matches last week, defeating Point Loma 245-347, before losing to Our Lady of Peace by the score of 248-252. The team continues to be paced by Monica Ascolani, Alexi Sanchez and Lauren Davis, according to Head Coach Kari Weidner. An early-week match against USDHS on Tuesday is followed by a match against Mira Mesa today.
The regular season concludes this week and is followed by the City Conference tournament next week and the City League Individual Play the following week.
Head Coach Robbin Adair and his Girls Tennis Team played went into battle last week and lost to OLP by the score of 12-6 and then lost to USDHS 16-2. "USDHS played like possible CIF champions against us," commented Adair. "We played our best tennis match all season and they took us apart. They dont have a weak spot in the lineup. They are really, really solid."
In the OLP match, the doubles teams won all six sets, with Briana Acuna/Elizabeth Hopkins, Kelsey Dampier/Gretchen Nielsen and Patience Collum/Alley Gordon all contributing.
